Who Is Enrique Peña Nieto?

The latest darling of Mexico's political scene is the handsome Enrique Peña Nieto. Among all those running for president, Nieto is perhaps the most popular at the moment. This has led to a great deal of worrying from his competitors in the presidential race.

Although the formal campaigning has yet to begin, Nieto seems to already be on the up and up with the voting population. He is an expert in the theater of politics and creates a tremendous impact on his audience when he speaks before his constituents. His charisma is such that people are naturally drawn to him, and not only for his looks.

Enrique Pena Nieto's immense popularity is blamed on his alleged deal with Televisa, Mexico's most powerful television network. He reportedly paid the mass media giant large sums of money over the last five years to advertise the accomplishments of his previous administration in the state of Mexico. The television company allegedly depicts a positive political and presidential image for Peña Nieto.

It is worth noting that people only began talking about this supposed deal following Nieto's admission of a relationship with Ms. Rivera of Televisa. Rivera is famous in her own right, perhaps even more popular than Nieto in a sense, given how many times her face has shown up in various soap operas with a cult following. He was married to Rivera three years after the death of his first wife, Monica Pretelini.

From his first marriage, Nieto has three children. Pretelini expired of a cardiac complication when Nieto was still the governor of the State of Mexico. Mexico's social scene was suddenly abuzz with interest in Nieto's doings following this unfortunate incident, given that Nieto had suddenly become one of the most desirable (and available) men in the country.

Nieto's fame with the females is merely a small contributor to his growing reputation. Part of his previous gubernatorial campaign was traveling to different parts of the state, asking constituents what public works they need, and pledging to deliver these promises or commitments or what he calls “compromisos”. He is known for having prioritized public works and related projects.

Many of the public work projects from the politician, upon completion, became press field days as Nieto did his best to promote his accomplishments, like any good politician. The result is that the prevailing view of Nieto paints him as a character who, contrary to other politicians, actually does what he says he shall do. It is a point of interest to critics, though, that Nieto has spent extravagant sums just to get the media exposure for these finished infrastructure projects.

An incident at a book fair not too long ago also drew critiques for the politician. Nieto was unable to state the titles and writers of tomes that he claimed were the ones he liked best. He admitted having a difficult time remembering the titles of books and that he focuses more on reading the content than memorizing its authors and titles.

His detractors basically had a field day when this happened. The issue was further ignited when his eldest daughter, Paulina, labeled her father's critics as a bunch of morons who only criticize him because they envy his position. Despite Nieto's attempt to admit to his own errors and to that of his child in her "undiplomatic" retort, the detractors have not paused in their criticism of him.

Enrique Peña Nieto asserts that his words are often taken out of context by his detractors. Still, he has the strongest presidential bid to date. Surveys and polls are indicating that he may well be the next Mexican president.
